We are thefuturefuture. Together we seek to re-examine how and why we do the things we do. As architects we believe that design transcends disciplines. We design with the intent to not simply bring one more thing into the world, but to progress ways of making and develop advancements in customization. More importantly, we design for pleasure. We hope you enjoy the result as much as we love the process.
Our designs incorporate the latest rapid prototyping technologies including CNC milling, laser cutting, and 3D printing. We exploit these processes to create results that are otherwise unattainable through traditional manufacturing processes. By utilizing the combination of custom design techniques and methods of fabrication, we create products made in wood, nylon, metal, and ceramic, with each piece different than every other. This enables us to offer affordable designs for mass consumption without mass production. We believe that custom is the new vintage.

Imagining the Lowline
The Lowline aims to build the world’s first underground park using innovative technology to bring sunlight underground. As part of the vision, “remote skylights” would concentrate natural sunlight at street level, and then channel it underground, generating enough light to support photosynthesis. The core of the “Imagining the Lowline” exhibit will feature the installation of a solar collector, a canopy distributor, and a small-scale green park, to help the community envision the technology and its stunning aesthetic elements.
As part of the “Experiments in Motion” initiative commissioned by Audi of America and in partnership with the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), nine student visions will be presented along with a 45-foot-long suspended model of Manhattan’s subway grid that contextualizes the Lowline within the city’s huge inventory of underground spaces. Researched with the help of the MTA, DOT, and the Center for Urban Real Estate (CURE), the 1:1500-scale replica of Manhattan’s mobility infrastructure presents a never-before-seen-view of every subway station on the island.
Together with additional information on the Lowline project and the community it will serve, “Imagining the Lowline” will engage visitors in a visually stimulating potential future. We hope it will continue a growing global discussion on the future of new public spaces– and the unclaimed value of our urban underground. 2012 Architecture -

Soft Brutalism
For the first annual Building Fashion, Leong Leong were selected as finalists and paired with fashion designer Siki Im. Challenged with the slim budget of $5,000 and limited to 3 days of construction, the temporary popup shop was open for 10 days beneath the High Line, adjacent to Neil Denari’s HL23.
From inception, the design was grounded by explicit dualities (light vs. dark, hard vs. soft, etc.), hoping that the liminal space created between these dichotomies would invite the ambiguity needed to question traditional definitions of retail space. 2012 Architecture, Exhibition Design, Fashion -
Blue Marlin
We were approached by Blue Marlin, an industrial design and packaging company, to design a “flex” space for their offices. The space was to be used by clients for meetings as well as have flexible work areas for clients working in their office. Blue Marlin’s main concerns were keeping the space adaptable and encouraging creativity.
We designed and fabricated all of the elements for the renovation. The space included a feature storage wall made of cardboard tubes of varying size, custom light fixtures, a screen wall made of panels rotating at different angles to produce a cohesive pattern, and various furniture elements. The overall space was subdivided by a series of rails and temporary walls made of industrial felt hung from the ceiling. The space could be used with an open plan or it could be divided into multiple configurations or rooms by moving the felt panels along the rails. The end result was a fun, playful space that was highly adaptable to accommodate their various needs.

Xtra Moenia
Xtra Moenia is a site specific installation designed and produced by SOFTlab for the San Gennaro North Gate. The piece was commissioned by Two Bridges Neighborhood Council and produced by The They Co. The installation serves as the North Gate to the annual San Gennaro Festival. We developed a form that created to distinct oculi as a reference to one of the simplest and most effective classical architecture devices. One oculi points up while the other hangs down defining a zone on the street for pedestrians. The two forms are created using a minimal surface blending the two oculi together in a way that blurs the distinction between the two. The final geometry was developed closely with the structural engineering firm Arup. The piece was completely held in tension from a series of cables that attached to surrounding buildings. The shape is completely site specific and can only find its’ true form when attached at specific points on the buildings and pulled perfectly into tension. Each panel on the surface is a custom fabricated unique piece scripted in a custom built software.
The installation is made of 4224 mylar laser cut panels. Each panel is a unique shape and has a photo gel color panel to accompany it. The color panels vary across the surface to create tongues that flap in the wind. The panels are connected using over 6,000 aluminum grommets. 2012 Architecture, Digital Art, Exhibition Design -
(n)arcissus
(n)arcissus is a site-specific spatial intervention in the stairwell of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, an artificial skin that drops down through the vertical space using gravity as a principle. By designing the form as a parametric model SOFTlab are able to manipulate the formal qualities of the final output while simultaneously optimizing it for physical construction. Their script breaks the surface down into individual surfaces for laser cutting, producing the unique modules needed to produce the larger structure.
Digital tools are not new to the field of architecture, but the last few years have seen an explosion in the use of generative systems combined with digital manufacturing processes. This new style of computational architecture explores the creation of complex forms based on parametric processes, giving rise to a new range of architectural expression while eliminating the economy of mass-produced form. Positioned at the heart of this movement, SOFTlab is an emerging architectural practice whose work combines scripted processes with knowledge of materials and principles of construction. 2012 Architecture, Digital Art, Exhibition Design -
pAlice
pAlice is a site-specific installation made of over 2400 laser cut traingular panels and over 3600 custom connections. All of the tooling and labeling was automated using a custom MEL script. pAlice was featured in the SYSTEM:SYSTEM exhibition.
